MRIB’s Claims Manager was on Christmas vacation when he received a call from a client late on Christmas Eve to advise that they had suffered a fire upon arrival to their holiday home in France.  They had lit their solid fuel stove, but unbeknown to them a bird’s nest had blocked the flue. This caused an excessive build-up of heat and the ensuing fire destroyed the stove, caused structural damage to wooden beams and floorboards, fire and smoke damage to an upstairs bedroom and airing cupboard, fire damage to electrical wiring and water damage from the subsequent fire service attendance. As a result, the property was rendered uninhabitable and the client was forced to return home to the UK the next day.

Our Claims Manager immediately notified insurers of the incident, and despite it occurring over the Christmas and New Year period, a Loss Adjuster was appointed and flew out to France to assess the damage in the first week of January. Estimates for the reinstatement works were requested and upon receipt of these the claim was quickly agreed in full, our Claims Manager pointing out to insurers that as per the policy schedule, no excess was applicable for claims resulting from fire and that the emergency travel costs that the client incurred returning to the UK should also be covered.
